Back to School Supplies
Our annual Back to School Supplies project serves over 500 children in the Owasso Public School District. Through this project, we are able to provide grade appropriate school supplies and backpacks to students enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program and in cases where there is an indication of financial need.
Our Concern:
In recent years, schools districts all over the country have faced budget cuts. Owasso Public Schools district is no exception to these national circumstances. Unfortunately, to compensate for budget cuts schools are asking parents to take the impact and fill the shortfall by buying, not just supplies for their own students but, also buying actual supplies for the classrooms. Consequently, school supply lists have grown from paper, pencils and pens to everything from gallon Ziploc bags and facial tissues to dry erase markers and cleaning supplies.
For families who struggle financially because of job loss or low paying jobs in our community, buying school supplies has become a financial crisis. This has the potential for limiting the amount of necessities met around their homes, like food, rent, and utilities just to acquire the school supplies needed for each one of the children in the home. In addition, families suffering from economic hardship often find it difficult to purchase school supplies which may prevent the student from taking full advantage of the educational opportunities in our community. This economic hardship is a major family stressor during the months of July and August and it is crucial for our organization to find resources to help families in our community. Our Back to School Supplies program helps alleviate this family’s stressor due to financial struggles that the new school year may bring.
Our Goal:
We work to ensure that all students begin on equal ground the first day of school and are given the same opportunity for academic success. We provide school supplies to all grades from the Pre-K program thru the 12th grade.
