7 Ways to a Successful Food Drive
- Select specific dates and locations. Determine a time frame that would be most effective in maximizing participation: a day, a week, or a month. Then decide if your drive will occur at one location or several.
- Organize a committee. An enthusiastic, dedicated committee that is good at motivating others will help to make the event a success. A mix of multigenerational members is a great way to brainstorm on how to get individuals of all walks of life involved.
- Set a goal. Aim high! Determine if you will collect food, money, or both. Then, set the goal. Having a target in mind and revisiting that target throughout the event will help build momentum. Determine the number of pounds or food items you want to collect, set a goal for each person, and then multiply this number by your total head count.
- Promote your event. Promote your event early and throughout. Display posters in visible locations, send out emails, and voice mails. Include reminders in newsletters, on your website, or in paychecks.
- Pack up your donations. If you are not using OCR collection boxes, pack your donated items in sturdy boxes that aren’t too heavy and securely taped.
- Make it easy. Make sure donors know exactly where to bring their donated items. For example, “Drop off items in the teachers’ lounge.” Provide grocery bags and/or donation envelopes if money is being accepted. A list of most needed items for the pantry is also helpful and can be provided by OCR.
- Make it fun! Build momentum with daily updates on your progress. Design fun challenges between departments or competing corporations. Give prizes or sponsor a party to the department, grade or class that raises the most food.
